Poodle recovers after pit bull attack

ARIZONA -- "I went to the backyard and saw a pit bull carrying her from the neck," said Victor Mayorga.

A pit bull in a west valley neighborhood somehow gets over a wall and into a family's yard Wednesday morning and attacked a Labrador and two poodles.

Family members say the pit bull had a bite-hold around this little poodle's neck.

"The worst thing came to my mind.. not only am I thinking of her, the other dogs came to my mind too," said Kimberly Mayorga.

"I saw her neck.. a really bad injury all the way to her throat," said Victor.

The poodle named "Moanie" was taken to a veterinary clinic and then rushed over to Sonoran Veterinary Specialists for immediate surgery.

"She's stable and on pain medicine right now, but I need to take her right away she's going to need surgery," said Kimberly.

Doctors at Sonoran Pet Specialists say her chances for recovery are improving, but Moanie's got a tough road ahead of her.

"The first thing is gonna be the airways, so if she had the airway torn, we have to stabilize that first and foremost.  Most of the blood and most of the obvious wounds are in the front end.. hopefully as we get her stable, we'll explore a little more in depth," said Dr. William Linney.

As for the pit bull, Phoenix police confiscated the dog near 83rd Avenue and Thomas Road.

"Pit bulls.. I don't like pit bulls.  They're kind of aggressive. I understand that's their animal instinct, but that could happen to a small kid," said Victor.

Kimberly says, "She's like our baby."

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control is now holding the pit bull.  They're trying to find the animal's owner.

It's not clear how the pit bull got into the family's yard.

As for Moanie the poodle, her breathing has stabilized and she's getting some rest.
