"Queenie could have had comfort in last days"

CANADA -- It was with much sadness I read your front page article regarding the little dog who was not given a chance by our animal control shelter.

Rainbow District Animal Shelter manager Richard Paquette plays God with the lives of our helpless animals and despite the fact a person came forward and generously offered to pay for adoption and vet check fees , as well as euthanasia fees if deemed necessary by a professional -- the door was slammed shut and the doggie was put down.

Shelter officials insisted this poor Shih Tzu be kept
at the shelter to die rather than be adopted out.

We really have to revisit how we choose our animal control shelter contractors here in Sudbury. As taxpayers we have to ask if the fee we pay these shelters is actually for the health and safety of the animals and the community at large, or is it lining the pocket of the animal control officer to the detriment of the care of the animals.

This little dog who was caged in her last days could have been given a warm lap and loving arms to cuddle her and comfort her in her last hours, if in fact the professional vet felt this was the right course of action for her. Did Paquette take any of this into consideration when planning how the end would come for this helpless little dog?

We need change. Should our shelters be run under the advisement of a licensed professional veterinarian? Should the financial records of the shelter be open to the taxpayer? Should Paquette be held more openly accountable for his unpopular actions regarding helpless animals?
