'Vicious' dog attack leaves pet wounded, Kanata woman with concussion

CANADA -- A Kanata woman wants a neighbour's dog put down after it attacked her and her miniature schnauzer. Diane George said she was walking her dog Abby along her Applecross Cres. on Saturday when the man's dog -- which a neighbour said was a bull mastiff weighing about 150 lbs. -- lunged at them.

"We were just walking and the dog came and lunged at my dog and grabbed her by the throat," she told the Sun on Sunday. "(The bigger dog) started bashing her on the ground."

George said she began to kick the animal while trying to cradle her own dog to protect it.

"He wasn't letting go, so I had to start kicking him and he threw me to the ground."

The dog knocked her back down every time she tried to get up, she said.

"(Abby) just kept screaming," she said. "He bit her and she screamed and she wouldn't stop crying."

George believes the attack lasted "a minute or two" before the dog's owner came and took his dog away. She was brought into a neighbour's car and called police.

Because she had smacked her head on the ground several time, she was immobilized on a stretcher by paramedics and taken to hospital, while her dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian.

Both dog and owner were lucky, she said. The animal suffered a penetrating bite to her ear and was given pain medication to make her comfortable while the rest of her body heals.

"(There's) nothing damaged right now that I can see," she said. "She's just sleeping a lot."

In addition to a concussion, George suffered scrapes and bruises, mostly to her elbow and knee.

"I'm the one that's all bashed up," she said.

Bylaw also responded to the call. George said the dog's owner was fined $620 and issued a muzzle order, but she doesn't believe that's enough.

"I want him euthanized," she said. "That's not an aggressive dog, that's a vicious dog.

"It's not safe for the neighbourhood, something has to happen."

Nobody answered when the Sun stopped by the house where the man lives. His home is several houses down the street from George's house.

Two other residents on the street said they saw the attack, with one describing it as "very scary."

No one at the City of Ottawa could be reached Sunday to confirm the charges against the owner.
