Woman walking her dog in Shaker Heights attacked by two pit bulls

OHIO -- Shaker Heights police are looking for the person who abandoned two pit bulls that attacked a college student Monday morning.

Ashley Debeljak was walking her German shepherd named Blair on Colton Road when a red car pulled up. She said she believes someone let the dogs out of the car before speeding away.

One of the pit bulls attacked her, biting her leg and biting her dog. A neighbor heard Debeljak scream and scared the dogs away.

Neighbor Gary Simon said he's glad he was in a position to help.

"Those dogs would have killed her," Simon said.

The dogs were captured by police and are now quarantined at the animal shelter. The pit bulls will be tested for rabies.

Neighbors said police told them the pit bulls were probably used for dog fighting and when they weren't needed anymore, they were abandoned.

[How do they know this? They don't want to believe that dogs will randomly attack. So they come up with this idea that they're fighting pit bulls - someone had to have MADE them this way - and then dumped them.

Dog fighters do not drive into subdivisions and dump fighting dogs. They "Michael Vick" them -- drowning, clubbing, hanging and electrocuting them and then dumping their bodies in mass graves or into the trash.]

"I'm so grateful for my neighbor Gary because if it weren't for him I don't think I would have made it home safely," said Ashley.

"I hope the person who let those dogs out sees this story and the harm they caused because that young woman could have been killed," said Simon.

Ashley is getting her doctorate in child psychology and plans to use Blair, a registered therapy dog, to work with children.
