WISCONSIN -- Police were called to a dog attack in progress Grantosa Dr. near Appleton Avenue just before 6 p.m. Monday.
A 17-year-old girl was walking in the alley with a friend when a pit bull began to attack. The girl suffered injuries on both arms, a leg and shoulder.
A neighbor heard the girl scream and grabbed a shovel. He began hitting the dog, trying to get the dog to stop. The dog then reportedly went after the girl's friend, and the neighbor again used the shovel to attempt to get the dog away from the friend.
"While the citizen continued to attempt to keep the dog from biting the victims friend, his son obtained a handgun and shot the dog once while it continue to attempt to [attack]," said Inspector Donald Gaglione with Milwaukee Police.
"The information received shows that the son fired in a safe direction and no citizens were indangered when he shot the dog in an attempt to prevent it from harming any other citizens."
The dog was injured and taken to the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission. The dog's owner was cited for allowing an animal to run at large and two addition animal related citations.
"The swift actions by both citizens involved prevented further injuries to the victim and any other citizens from being injured," Gaglione said.
