Doctors are treating Jones' injuries at a nearby hospital. Family members are asking for prayers while he recovers.
Stokes County Sheriff Mike Marshall said, "His injuries are extreme. We're hoping for the best...He has been an asset to our community. I'm hoping that he heals well."
Fire Marshal Frankie Burcham added, "It's going to be a long road to recovery. He's going to have to have several surgeries."
The incident happened off Hall Road while Jones was hunting. Family members tell WFMY News 2 Jones was hunting on family property and the dogs belonged to a family member. It's unclear why the dogs attacked Jones because family members said he had been around the dogs before.
In fact, Danbury Fire Chief James Hicks says Jones loves dogs and launched the fire department's K9 Unit.
"With his knowledge of dogs and animals, it was shocking that was what happened to him," Burcham said.
The owner of the three dogs voluntarily surrendered the three dogs to Stokes County Animal Control. Animal Control says all three dogs are up to date on their rabies shots. The agency will hold the dogs for 10 days to confirm they do not carry rabies and then they will all be euthanized at the request of the dogs' owner.
Hicks said the 65-year-old has been a member of the volunteer fire department for more than 20 years. "Bobby has been a real good asset to the department," he said. "He's going to be missed until he comes back."
Firefighters are planning a fundraising event Friday, September 20, 2013, for Jones' family at the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department.
