Greenwood police investigate dog attack on 1-year-old girl

SOUTH CAROLINA -- Police are investigating an incident during the weekend in which a 1-year-old girl was attacked by a dog and suffered broken bones.

The incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. Friday at a residence in the 500 block of Trakas Avenue.

According to a Greenwood police report, several children were pushing the toddler in a stroller and came to visit a home, as they regularly did.

The homeowner told officers she opened the door to talk to the children and her German Rottweiler exited the home and began to play with the juveniles. She said the dog began to lick the toddler's face as well as her uncle when someone began pulling the baby away from the dog.

At that point, the woman said the dog snapped without reaction time and bit the child one time in the facial area near the forehead. The owner began treating the child with a rag and called dispatch to inform them of the situation.

Police responded and transported the dog to an animal shelter, and the victim was taken to Self Regional Medical Center emergency room to be treated for her injuries.

Hospital staff advised officers the child suffered multiple broken bones in the face and her right incisor teeth were displaced, pushed up into her upper cheek.

The dog's owner, whose name was redacted from the report, was issued a summons for dogs running at large, the report indicated.
