Prosecutors said Barry Grove, 57, shot his dog, Anne, in his yard and then eventually loaded the animal in a vehicle and dumped it in a field behind his home.
A neighbor told police she heard the gunshot and saw the dog alive but severely wounded in the yard.
The neighbor heard the dog crying for about 20 minutes before Grove loaded it into the vehicle.
State police, who were called to investigate, found the dog alive but had to euthanize the animal due to the severity of its injuries.
Prosecutors said Grove was not to be in possession of a firearm due to previous criminal history.
“This was a cowardly act committed with a wicked heart,” District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller said in a statement. “The defendant gunned down a loving pet, callously prolonged its suffering and blatantly thumbed his nose at a law which prohibited him from even possessing a firearm to begin with.
“We will seek an appropriate sentence in state prison for this unthinkable behavior,” she said.
Attorney Joe Amendola, who is representing Grove, could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.
Grove is set to be sentenced Oct. 17 before Centre County President Judge Thomas K. Kistler.
