NORTH CAROLINA -- A man who tried to elude arrest by riding away on an injured horse has been charged with felony animal cruelty among other charges, according to Sheriff Neil Godfrey.
On Sept.16, 2013, deputies, while attempting to locate and arrest Rocky Wallace Chriscoe for warrants issued in Randolph County, found an injured horse tied to a tree near Chriscoe’s residence.
Sheriff’s Office Investigators notified Moore County Animal Control Officers who responded to the scene to assess the horse’s condition. The horse had several severe wounds on his back and abdomen. The horse was also malnourished and required immediate medical care.
Investigators received information from several witnesses that the suspect was using the horse to elude deputies that attempted to arrest him.
Moore County Animal Control Officers transported the horse for treatment through the Southern Pines Equine Clinic and Healing Hearts Equine Rescue. Doctors and equine rescue members worked through the night in an attempt to save the horse but were unsuccessful due to the severity of the injuries and the horse’s malnourished condition.
On September 20, 2013 Sheriff’s Investigators arrested Rocky Wallace Chriscoe, 33, of 216 Wilkes Road, Seagrove, N.C. Chriscoe was charged with one count of felony cruelty to animals, one count of misdemeanor child abuse, and one count of resisting a public officer. Chriscoe attempted to flee the arresting deputies while carrying his young daughter, age 2.
Investigators also served three other warrants on Chriscoe: one warrant from Randolph County for resisting a public officer, one warrant from Randolph County for driving while license revoked and operating a vehicle with fictitious vehicle registration, and one warrant from Moore County for probation violation.
Chriscoe was confined in the Moore County Detention Center with a total bond of $22,500. His court date is scheduled for October 14, 2013.
