Man Shoots Dog While Defending Himself from Alleged Attack

TEXAS -- Southside residents heard shots fired in that part of town Friday, after a homeowner was attacked by a pit bull and used a gun for defense.

"I've been in combat," said Dennis Ward, who was allegedly attacked by the dog. "I've been shot at. I've been shot, beaten and stabbed, and nothing scared me more than them two dogs coming at me."

Ward said he was heading outside to check on his racing cars after hearing a commotion. That's when one of the two dogs latched onto his pant-leg and began to attack. Ward said he is a concealed handgun license holder and had no choice but to defend himself.

"And I kicked him away, and as I kicked it away, it came at me again and I shot the first time," Ward said. "And it backed off, and then it got in more of an aggressive stance and the mouth opened up, showing teeth, and it jumped at me again. And I backed up and at that point I shot. I had my weapon out at that point, and I shot him, and I hit him on the side. I'm shaking. I'm still shaking."

The dog was taken to the veterinarian for treatment, but it's unknown if it survived the shooting. In the meantime, neighbors said they have seen the two dogs roaming the area before, but they never seemed aggressive.
