Man starves his horse, gets to keep his "bleeding donkey"

IDAHO -- A Buhl man has been charged with crimes since his starving horse was found hobbled in a Buhl pasture July 19.

David Gonzalez, 52, of Buhl, is cited with two counts of animal neglect and one count of obstructing an officer.

The Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office started investigating when the paint was found hobbled in a pasture. The owner was identified after a July 24 Times-News article seeking information about the horse and its owners, the sheriff’s office reported.

On July 26, a hobbled and bleeding donkey was found in the same pasture in which Gonzalez apparently had permission to keep livestock. Gonzalez was charged with neglect of both animals.

The 2-year old paint stud colt is working his way back to good health. He had 200 pounds to gain, and he still has 100 to go.

He will be auctioned by the Twin Falls Livestock Commission this Friday.

“Mr. Gonzalez has taken care of the donkey. A vet examined him, and he will not be seized,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Lori Stewart.
