"Nothing but sweet" Pit bull euthanized after attacking Alton girl

ILLINOIS -- A young girl is recovering at home after being attacked by a pit bull earlier this week. Now, that dog has been euthanized and police are investigating.

The attack happened in the 400 block of Brookside Avenue in Alton Tuesday night. Eight-year-old Katie is now confined to the couch. Her thigh is wrapped up and healing after a 2-year-old pit bull bit her numerous times.

Her mom says doctors tell them there will most likely be scars, but that's just physical.

"Terrified of dogs the rest of her life," said Becky Dixon, Katie's mom.

Katie was at her dad's house in Alton, playing outside with the neighbor's kids. The neighbor opened the house door and that's when the pit bull ran outside towards the group of kids.

"It ran by my other daughter who's 13, and then it decided to stop and take a bite out of her," said Dixon.

Katie tried getting next door to her dad's house, but fell down, unable to walk any further. The dog's owner got to Katie after she had been attacked, scooped her up and took her to her mom's.

Dixon says they immediately went to the hospital, where doctors found several bites, torn tendons and a damaged nerve.

"They measured them like three centimeters deep, and there's at least three to four in the front, one big one in the back, and then her leg is just all scratched up and there's a bunch of small bites," she said.

The dog's owner did not want to go on camera, but did say that it was an accident and that the dog has been nothing but sweet until Tuesday night. Adding that they signed the papers to euthanize the dog Wednesday morning. They are now hoping for Katie's recovery.

"I ain't going to lie, I cried my eyes out, it was horrible," said Dixon.

Police say the dog owner was cited and fined for failure to restrain a dog and they are still investigating other possible charges.
