Owner claims she could not afford to feed Sunny

UNITED KINGDOM -- An owner who claimed she could not afford to feed her severely emaciated dog, which was rescued by animal inspectors, has been banned from keeping pets for three years.

The deerhound-type dog was found in a room in Helen Young’s house filled with rubbish, faeces and urine; and there was no evidence of food and water being available.

The dog, called Sunny, was so weak she had to be lifted into a van by a Scottish SPCA inspector.

Young (43), 164 Califer Road, Forres admitted that between January 1 and May 23 this year she caused unecessary suffering to the dog by failing to provide adequate nutrition and veterinary attention when it became extremely emaciated.

She also pled guilty to failing to feed the dog, take her to a vet for five years, failing to protect her from suffering and disease, and failing to provide a suitable environment for the dog to live in.

Young did not appear at Elgin Sheriff Court on Thursday but pled guilty by letter.

Fiscal depute Kevin Corrins said a Scottish SPCA inspector called at Young’s house on May 23 and found the dog emaciated and unsteady on its feet.

"Scottish SPCA Chief Inspector John Carle said: "Her long coat disguised how thin she was but every bone in her body could be felt.

"The investigating inspector commented that she has never felt such a thin living dog in her 16 years of service with the society.

"This was a case of serious neglect and Sunny would not have survived for much longer had she not been rescued.

"In our opinion, Young is unfit to provide animals with the proper care they deserve.

"Thankfully, Sunny has made a tremendous recovery and we are delighted we can now find her a loving new owner."
