OKLAHOMA -- A man shot and killed a family dog Thursday night after the dog attacked his wife.
Police said the family had four dogs and had no problems with them in the past.
Two of the dogs, a Labrador retriever and a pit bull terrier, got into a fight about 10:30 p.m. Thursday in their house at 3401 Fox Hill Terrace, police spokeswoman Jennifer Monroe said.
The wife suffered a significant head wound and injuries to her hands and arms while trying to break up the fighting dogs, Monroe said. The husband suffered injuries to his hands and arms. Police did not release their names.
The husband got a gun from inside the house and shot the pit bull terrier, Monroe said.
Officers found the pit bull terrier dead in the kitchen. The three surviving dogs spent the night at the police department's animal welfare unit and were returned to the owners Friday, police said.
The owners were taken to OU Medical Center to be treated for injuries, Monroe said. She did not know their conditions Friday.
No charges will be filed in the incident, Monroe said. The dogs were current on shots and registration.
The dog that was killed belonged to the homeowners' son, and the animals had been together in the past without problems, police said.
