Guadalupe Sanchez, the owner of the horses, had been keeping the animals on a friend's property in the 2700 block of Oak Island Drive before they were discovered by a Bexar County Sheriff's Deputy on Sunday.
According to officials who visited the property, there was little to no water for the horses, and no food was available for them to eat.
The horses were described by police as having “numerous open wounds to their heads, legs, sides, and rears.” One horse was dead.
The charge against Sanchez, cruelty to livestock animals, is a misdemeanor. His bond was set at $3,000.
Sanchez told authorities he bought the horses in the condition they were in, but failed to produce any evidence supporting the claim, according to an affidavit. Sanchez also did not know how many horses were on the property, authorities said.
