St. Paul police officer fatally shoots attacking dog

MINNESOTA -- St. Paul police shot and killed a pit bull dog that attacked officers Thursday who were responding to a domestic assault case.

Two officers were called to an address in the 600 block of Sherburne Avenue at 5:40 p.m. for an assault that involved a 21-year-old man who tried to choke his 55-year-old father, according to police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos.

The officers were trying to locate the son in his apartment when the suspect's dog charged at them, Paulos said.

One of the officers jumped up on a couch to avoid the dog and then shot twice at the dog, killing it, Paulos said.

Paulos said the suspect, who was also wanted for a felony theft case, had fled the location and was not arrested.

The father suffered minor injuries, according to a police report.
