150 snakes found in home, police say

OHIO -- Authorities in northeastern Ohio found more than 150 snakes, some poisonous, in a suburban Youngstown home yesterday.

News media in the Youngstown area reported that authorities went to the home of Joseph McCollum, 46, to check on him because he had been bitten by a snake and didn’t receive proper treatment.

Animal-control officer Dave Nelson said McCollum’s home in Struthers housed various poisonous snakes, including rattlesnakes — the snake that bit McCollum — and cobras. Nelson said he had dealt with dangerous snakes before, but not so many at once.

“The basement is filled with tub after tub of snakes,” the assistant Mahoning County dog warden told The Vindicator newspaper. “I’ve never seen them in this type of mass quantities.”

WFMJ-TV said McCollum, an operator of the Boa Store, which sells Boa constrictors online, faces charges including child endangerment because a 12-year-old child lives in the home.

A wildlife-rescue organization is working with authorities on what to do with the snakes.

A message was left yesterday for McCollum, but was not returned.
