Owner of pit bull killed in hot car slams "dumb" cruelty charges

VIRGINIA -- The Commonwealth's Attorney has just filed animal cruelty charges against two Richmond women.

They are accused of leaving two pit bulls in a hot car. One of the dogs died.

We first told you about this when it happened early last month along Adams and Pulliam Street. The owner of the dog that died is now speaking out for the first time.

Montana, a blue brindle pit bull, died in a hot car. Eric Jones says he could not believe the news.

"I thought she was lying to me," said Jones. "She called me and said your dog is dead. I said stop playing."

Eric's two friends, Bria Crawford and Elnaz Rahimpour, are now facing animal cruelty charges.
"You don't blame her?" we asked.

"It's her fault," said Eric. "What can I say? She killed my dog. It is over now."

A concerned neighbor made the gruesome discovery back in September.

"It's devastating. It's unbelievably devastating." said Katy Best, who tried to save the puppy. "The other girl kind of pushed the window down and I just happened to have really skinny arms and unlocked the door."

But it was too late. Montana was dead when animal control arrived.

"They just had to pull it out in trash bags... This beautiful animal," said Best.

The woman allegedly in charge of watching the dogs, Elnaz Rahimpour, was in tears as crews managed to rescue a second animal named Rocky. Rocky was left in a crate in the back seat.

"I think the charges are dumb," said Eric. "Because one of them wasn't even there. She was at work."

Bria Crawford claims she was at work, but she is Rocky's owner.

Best confronted Crawford on the day of the incident.

"This is unacceptable," said Best. "You're not even crying."

"You don't even know even [expletive] know me," replied Crawford. "I'm upset, and you're bringing people over here. The situation is already bad enough. You're not helping at all!""

As for Eric--he admits he has gone through a number of emotions.

"Just hurt and then mad," said Eric.

The two women are due in court Tuesday morning at 9 am.
