UNITED KINGDOM -- A DAD of three may never be able to speak again after his throat was ripped open by his dog as he had a fit.
Alexander Murray had to undergo emergency surgery after Gizzmo – his eight-year-old Staffordshire-Collie cross – sank its teeth into his neck, narrowly missing a major artery.
The 34-year-old – known as Sandy – has been unconscious since he was savaged at his home in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, on Friday morning.
He was only saved when his partner Catherine managed to drag the dog away and lock it in another room as he lay semi-conscious.
Police confirmed the dog was destroyed immediately after the attack.
It came just over a year after it was claimed the same dog ripped part of Sandy’s ear off as he had an epileptic fit in his garden.
Catherine, 50, said Sandy – who has three children from a previous relationship – is in intensive care at Wishaw General Hospital.
Yesterday, she said: “Sandy is still on a ventilator. The doctors put him to sleep for surgery and he hasn’t regained consciousness. They are going to try and wake him up today. We don’t even know if he will be able to speak after this.”
Catherine, who also owns a German shepherd, said Sandy was attacked after he had a seizure while lying on a couch in the living room.
She explained: “I went to get the mail and went into my bedroom for about two minutes. I thought the German shepherd and Gizzmo were in the hall. That is when Sandy must have had his seizure.
“When I came out, I saw Gizzmo attacking Sandy. The dog grabbed hold of his neck near his voicebox and missed the artery on his neck by a centimetre.
“I just ran over, grabbed Gizzmo and booted him away. Then I called the ambulance.”
Last August, the Record’s sister paper the Hamilton Advertiser told of claims Gizzmo ripped part of Sandy’s ear off as he had a fit.
But yesterday Catherine denied the dog attacked Sandy last year.
She said: “The dog has no history of doing this. I wouldn’t have it if that had happened. I’d have had him put down.”
Police confirmed they are probing the latest incident.
