Police find malnourished dog; owner not arrested

TEXAS -- Police are investigating an animal cruelty case following the discovery of a malnourished Chihuahua on Tuesday afternoon at a South Laredo apartment complex.

At about 3 p.m., police responded to an animal cruelty report in the 2900 block of Barrios Street. The complainant told police there was an underfed and “extremely skinny” Chihuahua, said Investigator Joe E. Baeza, Laredo Police Department spokesman.

“The dog did have water but was very sick and slender to the point where you could see his rib cage, Baeza said.

Officers talked to the owner, but they did not arrest her. Baeza said she had a child with her and no other person was available to care for the child.

The case will be presented to the Webb County district attorney’s office for the approval of an arrest warrant.
