Two charged with keeping pit bulls in crates with no food or water

NEW JERSEY -- Lawrence L. Brown, 29, of Neptune and Nieema L. Cooper of Asbury Park are both being charged with six counts of animal cruelty after keeping two pit bulls, including a pup near death, in crates without water or food and stepping in their own feces, authorities said.

Brown and Cooper were co-owners of the dogs and are being charged with two counts failure to provide sustenance (veterinarian care), two counts cause and procure unnecessary suffering, and two counts of failure to provide water and shelter, said Victor “Buddy” Amato, chief law enforcement officer of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Associated Humane Society notified the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after receiving a phone call about the neglected conditions the dogs were living in, Amato said.

The pit bull pup who was found to be near death is now doing better, Amato said.

Brown is being held in Monmouth County jail in Freehold on $150,000 bail after a foot pursuit and a struggle with police officers on Sept. 16, police said. He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon after he got rid of a loaded .22 caliber rifle - which he had hidden in a leg of his pants - while running from police, Detective Lt. Dave DeSane of the Asbury Park Police Department said.

Amato said he is hoping to have Brown’s bail raised with the addition of the new charges.
