AUSTRALIA -- A Wagga baby will require facial surgery after being attacked by the family’s dog on Wednesday night.
The nine-month-old boy was flown to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a serious condition after being mauled by the pet, which has been described as a golden retriever.
Police have been told the child was being held on his mother’s lap when he was bitten, resulting in severe head and facial injuries. The injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
It is understood the boy’s mother pulled the dog off her son during the ordeal, which unfolded inside the home about 6pm.
A spokeswoman from ambulance media said paramedics responded to the incident but were called off as the toddler had been taken to hospital by private vehicle.
The boy was treated at Wagga Base Hospital before being flown to Sydney. Police say the baby will need reconstructive surgery on his face.
The dog has been destroyed by Wagga City Council rangers.
