"They all got bubble baths last night and have been completely checked over, de-wormed, and are now in foster homes to be evaluated," said a spokeswoman for Utah Animal Adoption Center, formerly Wasatch Humane Society.
The group's Facebook page, Utah Animals, and website, utahanimaladoptioncenter.org, received numerous offers of help after the story of the cats and kittens broke Friday.
Two of the cats who are pregnant are being kept at the shelter, 1955 Redwood Road. Their kittens will be available for adoption in about 12 weeks.
According to news reports, the landlord of the two unnamed elderly brothers who apparently were taking care of the cats evicted them because of the pet problem then called Brigham City animal control. Box Elder Dispatch had no reports on the incident, dispatchers Saturday noting it was handled by the shelter group after they were contacted by animal control.
Lindsay Ortega, cat lead for the adoption center, handled the case and said she'd never come across that amount of cats in one home.
"I've never seen anything quite like this," she said, "especially because they were all under a year old."
The cats began with just one pregnant cat. But in the last year, they kept spawning until they became 40. Ortega said that as the cats' numbers kept growing, it became overwhelming for the men.
"I don't think they had the knowledge or the resources to deal with it," she said.
Most of the cats were skinny, in need of nourishment, Ortega said.
It was unclear if the brothers would be facing any legal consequences.
