TEXAS -- A Denton man was arrested Wednesday after police say he tried to kill a dog by breaking its neck because he didn’t want it anymore, Denton police announced in a news release Thursday.
Police said when Richard Garrett Simms, 21, could not kill the dog, his roommate stabbed it and placed its body in a nearby dumpster.
Simms faces a charge of animal cruelty, police said. The roommate has not been charged at this time.
Denton Animal Control received an anonymous complaint several days ago that someone had killed a dog, because they didn’t want the animal anymore and placed it in a dumpster.
On October 28 an animal control officer found the dumpster in the 400 block of Simmons Street with the deceased dog inside.
The dog’s body was examined where it appeared to have stab wounds on either side of its rib cage.
Denton police contacted a residence nearby the dumpster, and determined in their investigation that the man’s roommate, Simms, had been watching the dog.
The roommate told police Simms tried to kill the dog by breaking its neck after he did not want to care for it anymore.
The roommate then stabbed the dog to put it out of its misery, police said.
Simms turned himself into police Wednesday and was later released on a $500 bond.
The investigation is ongoing.
