Guyana: Pit Bull breeder mauled by her own dogs; neighbors rush in with sticks and machetes and beat and hacked the dogs until they stopped their attack

GUYANA -- Neighbors, aided by police ranks, were forced to slaughter several pit bulls, after two of the animals mauled their female owner at Ogle, East Coast Demerara, yesterday morning.

Rochelle Callender, 32, was bitten on the back, arms and limbs after two of the dogs escaped from wooden pens in which they were housed.

She was saved from further injury when neighbors, armed with machetes and sticks, beat and chopped the animals. They also vented their anger on several other dogs, which were still penned.

Video footage posted on a website showed the irate neighbors clubbing and hacking the dogs. Some were also reportedly shot by police ranks who were alerted about the attack.

Kaieteur News understands that the woman’s husband has been rearing the animals for several years and would sell the pups.

According to reports, Ms. Callender was washing in her yard at around 07:00 hrs yesterday when two of the dogs, which had escaped from their pen, pounced on her.

A neighbor told Kaieteur News that he heard Ms. Callender’s screams and then saw the animals attacking her as she lay on the ground.

“She was trying to escape but they were clinging to her feet,” he recalled.

The animals only released their victim after several neighbors, armed with sticks and sharp implements, scaled the fence and began to club and chop them.

The injured woman was rushed to a city hospital where she was treated and discharged.

Residents believe that the attack would have been fatal had neighbors not rushed immediately to Ms. Callender’s aid.
