Rockingham County woman charged with animal cruelty

NORTH CAROLINA -- A Rockingham County woman is facing an animal cruelty charge after deputies said she hoarded animals at her home.

Diane Mabe was charged Friday with one count of cruelty to animals and officials said more charges could be forthcoming.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office said it received several calls complaining about possible animal hoarding at 750 Settlement Road in Stoneville.

Deputies and others raided the home Friday and rescued 29 dogs, 18 birds, six cats, four miniature horses and a donkey.

Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page said the animals were not the only ones living in the poor conditions.

“Our concern last night was to check on the welfare and safety of Mr. Mabe, who’s a disabled veteran who has some disabilities living in the situation and also our concern for the animals who were affected,” he said.

Deputies said they are looking into possible elder abuse charges. Diane Mabe is Mr. Mabe’s wife.
