Warrant out for dog attack suspect

FLORIDA -- In the months since her dog was attacked and killed by two pit bulls on the beach she lives on, Kathy Doolittle hasn't been able to enjoy her oceanfront property. She says it brings back too many horrible memories.

"When you have your dog totally destroyed while you're holding it in your arms and you're trying to protect it and you're watching it take its last breath, you see that in your head every day of your life," said Doolittle.

But Thursday she could start to heal. She said there's new justice for her 8-pound Pomeranian, Cassidy. The State Attorney's Office issued a warrant for the pit bull's owner, Doolittle's neighbor, Julie Shumer. The warrant blames Shumer for the attack.

"It's about responsibility. It's about making people responsible for their animals," said Doolittle.

According to the warrant,Shumer's dogs had a violent history which included seven other attacks.

I went to Shumer's home and a man who claimed to be walking the pit bulls during the attack came to the door. He said he couldn't comment because of the pending case and that Shumer was out of town.

As for Doolittle, nothing will bring back her best friend, but she hopes Cassidy's death serves as a warning to others.

"It may save a life," she said. "You just have to be accountable for your animals."
