Auburn firefighters rescue dog from pond

MAINE -- Rescuers put on cold water rescue suits and filled up an inflatable rescue boat to go get the dog, while others made a rope system to make sure the rescuers and boat could be pulled back to shore if they got in trouble.

Firefighters said they got a call just after 2 a.m. that the dog was stranded in a hole about 200 feet from shore.

Rescuers put on cold water rescue suits and filled up an inflatable rescue boat to go get the dog, while others made a rope system to make sure the rescuers and boat could be pulled back to shore if they got in trouble.

Firefighter Julian Beale and Lt. Don Therrien found the dog in grave condition, according to Fire Chief Frank Roma.

Roma said the pair put the exhausted and hypothermic dog into the inflatable rescue boat.

Rescue crews then began pulling Beale, Therrien and the boat back to shore. Roma said at one point Therrien fell through the thin ice but was able to crawl out of the water and back onto the ice.

Once back on shore, paramedics began resuscitating the dog and took it by ambulance to the emergency veterinary hospital in Lewiston.

On the way, rescuers began re-warming the dog and used a mask to deliver it oxygen, and its owner was located and told about the situation.

Roma told WMTW News 8 that the dog, which was initially in critical condition when it arrived at the veterinary hospital, is expected to recover.

[Looks like a Doberman in the video.]
