IOWA -- Sixty living and two deceased animals were reportedly rescued from the home of a man who died after he exchanged gunfire with police.
Steven Vogel, 38, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013. After neighbors reported Vogel was shooting at homes and passing vehicles in his neighborhood, police arrived only to be fired upon as well.
Vogel was shot when police officers returned fire. He was taken to a Des Moines hospital where he later died.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa reported they removed 55 exotic birds, four cats, one snake and two deceased birds from Vogel’s home.
“We will be working with the next of kin to determine the permanent placement for the animals, but in the meantime the animals will remain under the care of the ARL,” according to a post on the ARL website.
Anyone interested can sign up online to be notified if the birds become available for adoption.
