Doberman rescued from icy Missouri lake after chasing geese and falling in

MISSOURI -- Diablo the dog had a devil of the time when he started chasing geese on a frozen pond at the weekend.

The dopey Doberman Pinscher had a brush with mortality after he crashed through the ice at O'Fallon Park in St Louis, Mo., and got stuck for almost half an hour.

With temperatures in the water well below zero, the pet pooch thrashed around trying to escape.

Worried walkers spotted the floundering pup, trapped some 20 yards from the pond's edge, and dialed 911.

Firefighters arrived and found the dog close to death.

But, wearing ice suits and using a ladder and ropes, they managed to haul the frosty hound to safety.

They then handed Diablo over to owner Jason Newsome, who wrapped him in a warm blanket and took him to a veterinarian.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that, incredibly, Diablo suffered no permanent damage from his ordeal.
