#1 Beat with board. Nope, didn't work. #2 Stab with knife. Nope, didn't work. #3 Shoot three times until dead.

CALIFORNIA -- SPCA Senior Field Officer Richard Wright carries a dead pit bull from a backyard in the 800 block of North West Street in Visalia on Thursday.

The stray made its way into the backyard and attacked the resident's dog.

Police reported that initial attempts to stop the attack didn't work -- including striking the pit bull with a board and then stabbing it with a knife. Finally, a neighbor ran over and shot the pit bull three times with a handgun.

The resident's dog escaped without injuries.
