Animal Control: Dog Shot To Death After Failed Drowning Attempt

KENTUCKY -- Jessamine County Animal Care and Control and the Jessamine County Sheriff's Office are seeking the public's help with an animal cruelty investigation.

Officials are looking for the owner of a dog found dead in the area of Joe Cox Road on Saturday afternoon. Animal Control officers say it appears the dog was shot after an attempt to drown the animal in a frozen pond failed.

A property owner found the dead dog Saturday around 4 p.m.

Officials say the dog had been implanted with a microchip at the Elizabethtown Animal Hospital and is registered to Julie A. Land, whom officials have not been able to find.

Animal Control Officers have interviewed several of the residents in the area and say they do have a witness who said they saw a late 1990's model Ford Explorer, green in color speeding away from the area at the time officials believe the incident happened.

Officials say the dog was a black Pomeranian with some grey on its legs. He had a small leather leopard print collar on and a leash was attached to the collar. The leash had been duct taped to a rock and thrown into a frozen pond.

Officials said they believe someone put the dog in the ice with the rock attached to him in an attempt to drown the animal.

Animal Control Officers said the dog had injuries that looked like from gunshot wounds. They also found a shotgun shell casing in the same area the dog was found.

Officials say they believe someone shot the dog after drowning the animal didn't work.

Jessamine County Animal Care and Control is asking for the public's assistance in locating the owner of the dog or if anyone has any further information about the incident.

If you have any information pertaining to this case please contact Jessamine County Animal Care and Control at (859)881-0821.
