Child attacked by pit bull in east Valley in critical condition

NEVADA -- Metro Lt. John Loretto confirmed a 7-year-old boy was attacked by a pit bull Friday evening on the east side of the Valley.

The attack occurred at an apartment complex on Exeter Drive, near Lake Mead and Hollywood boulevards.

According to Loretto, the child was rushed to University Medical Center with a severe bite on the calf.

A neighbor shot the dog twice, but the dog survived. Animal control officers are in possession of the animal.

It's believed the dog either belongs to the child's family or a friend of the family. Child protective services and neglect teams are investigating the incident.

According to UMC's spokesperson Danita Cohen, the boy is in critical condition at Children's Hospital of Nevada at UMC.

Dog trainers warn parents to always supervise their children when around the family pet.

"Too many families think that little Fluffy is just so cute and cuddly," said Donna Foreman, owner of
Smarty Paws Canine Coaching. "And children think they're stuffed animals, and they just don't handle them like a live creature."

Foreman said pit bulls have a bad reputation because they're a larger breed of dogs; therefore, their bite is bigger. She said educating children and training dogs is a way to keep the family safe.

Police are still searching for the person who shot the dog.
