TEXAS -- A 6-year-old girl was in McLane Children's Hospital in Temple Thursday after she was attacked by a dog, which a Killeen police officer was forced to kill.
The attack happened at around 6 p.m. Wednesday in the 5600 block of Elk Ridge Court near Timber Ridge Elementary School in Killeen, police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said.
The dog was chasing the girl and two other children, ages 5 and 13, when officers arrived.
The three children had been playing near their home when the dog escaped from a fenced yard and ran toward them, Smith said.
The dog bit two of them and then the children began to run, Smith said.
The Belgian Malinois - German Shepherd mix chased the 6-year-old, bit her and tried to drag her, Smith said.
An officer was able to get the dog off the girl, but then later, as paramedics were treating the injured children and police were waiting for an animal control officer to arrive, the dog again attempted to attack, Smith said.
An officer shot the dog three times, killing it.
Two of the three children were treated at and later released from Seton Medical Center in Harker Heights and the 6-year-old was taken to McLane Children’s Hospital with what Smith described as serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The dog's owner was cited for dog at large and for not providing proof of rabies vaccination.
The dog will be tested for rabies. Results are expected by Monday.
