Neighbor talks about aiding elderly woman during dog attack

ALABAMA -- It's still unclear why an elderly woman was attacked by a pack of dogs Tuesday afternoon in Cottondale.

The Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Office says the 73-year-old woman was walking down a stretch of dirt road with her walker in the 14000 block of Clements Roads when four dogs ran up an approached her in a reportedly aggressive manner.

Authorities say the dogs knocked her on the ground and a pit bull then began biting her legs and foot. That woman screamed for help. That's when a neighbor, Tina Stanley, went running to find her lying in what she says was a pool of blood.

"I told him [the dog], 'Let go, let go.' And he just looked at me," Stanley said. "And her blood was just gushing everywhere. It hit that artery. And that was awful."

Wednesday Stanley's voice is still sore from yelling for help. Stanley tells FOX6 another neighbor eventually came out to help and they were able to scare the dogs away. Stanley isn't sure what set the dogs off.

"[The woman] is sweet as she can be. She walks all the time," Stanley added. "They've never bothered her. We don't know what happened."

Animal control officers were able to capture three of the four dogs. We're told the the other dog ran off into the woods. Stanley says the elderly woman might have to have surgery because of the attack.

Other nearby neighbors tell FOX6, the dogs aren't aggressive at all. Some of the dogs are believed to be strays. No charges have been filed in this case.
