Outfoxed by a roof! Fox tears foot after getting caught on a shed

UNITED KINGDOM -- This mischievous fox tore a paw after he was trapped hanging upside down from a shed roof.

He got stuck upside down in Cheam, Surrey, on Friday, December 27, and has been recuperating at a rescue centre ever since.

The poor creature's rear foot was torn after he was left dangling from the roof, but he is now on the road to recovery.

Now Riverside Animal Centre in Beddington, who have been caring for him, hope to release him back into the wild within a fortnight.

Every year, the centre rescues and cares for up to 200 foxes. These range from adults injured in accidents through to sick and orphaned cubs and they will often need to spend weeks or even months in the care.

The RSPCA warns never trying to free an animal from a snare or trap as you could hurt yourself and the animal and it could be an offence if the animal was legally caught.

People are advised to stay back to avoid stressing the animal and call the RSPCA immediately.

There are no official government figures for the exact population of foxes in the UK as Defra has not made an estimate of the population of foxes, it said in a Freedom of Information request last year.

Fox population figure estimates for British mammals, published by the Mammal Society in 2004, indicate that the prebreeding adult fox population in Great Britain was around 58,000, 33,000 of which live in urban areas.

Fox populations fluctuate from year to year. Estimates indicate it was stable or slightly increasing between 1995 and 2004. Urban foxes rarely move to rural areas.
