"Dog owner decries shooting of pet"
NEW MEXICO -- I am a Las Cruces native and NMSU graduate with a degree in animal science. Animal behavior is not only my career, it is my passion. The dog killed Feb. 12 was my family's dog.
His name was Jack.
Many of you know who I am, but more people knew Jack. He was a black Catahoula mix.
Jack could be seen all around town, usually accompanied by a German shepherd, and sometimes a fat blonde Chihuahua. He traveled with many different family members, but has been seen with us at the Las Cruces dog park, standing in line at Caliche's, playing in day care at Mesilla Valley Pet Resort.
He went to St. Clair's winery for their Yappy Hour, he swam in the river, he sat patiently next to us at Andele's Dog House and High Desert Brewery. He befriended many dogs who were too scared to start playing with everyone else at the dog park.
People of Las Cruces, you knew this dog.
So on behalf of an innocent animal who couldn't say to the strangers he approached, "I'm lost, please help me because I know and trust humans," I am saying it for him.
To the officer who shot him, he would've said "You look scary and I am cornered, so all I can do is give you a warning."
Once you stepped away, he would've minded his own business. I know this, because I am an animal professional and this was my dog.
[Notice she's blaming the victim? She wasn't there, but says it's the officer's fault... if only he'd done the right thing and "stepped away", this wouldn't have happened. Also, she "knows" this because she is an "animal professional". Ohhhh, ok, well I guess that means we should believe everything she says. One need only go to Craven Desires to see that people give themselves titles all the time calling themselves "animal whisperers", "animal behaviorists", etc.]
I know you will exaggerate his actions, act like he was trying to attack you when all he was doing was coming over excitedly.
To the officer who did this, you killed one of my family members, a loved member of our community, and I want everyone in Las Cruces to know it.

Wilcox's statements might work a bit better if the event had not been video taped. Another "animal professional" who was not there but feels free to blame the police for her own negligence.
