Purebred dog shot and killed, mistaken for coyote

MICHIGAN -- A purebred Weimaraner dog is dead after being shot and killed by a coyote hunter in the City of Ishpeming.

According to the Ishpeming Police Department, the dog was shot and killed on Cliffs Drive Sunday
.
Reports say that the 62-year-old suspect claims that he mistook the dog, which was wearing a yellow reflective vest and orange collar, for a coyote. He added that he did not see the vest or collar due to low light conditions.

The suspect was taken into custody on Thursday and is facing a charge of careless discharge of a firearm and property damage over $50. Police say that the location of the incident is a wooded area located inside the city limits.

Police say that the dog was not on a leash at the time of the incident, and was roughly 10 yards in front of the owners when it was killed.

The police department says an ordinance prohibits the discharge of firearms or shooting arrows inside the city limits.
