State of Alabama: "Feed your dogs for one year and then you can go back to starving them to death"

ALABAMA --  The two dogs involved in a recent animal cruelty case were turned back over to their Hanceville owner following a municipal court date last week.

Stanley Wade Speakman, Jr., 29, was arrested on Feb. 4 after his two dogs were found outside of his formerly rented residence in a fenced area, malnourished and dehydrated a week earlier.

According to the Cullman municipal court, the case is an administrative docket that has been put on hold.

Speakman was given custody of the dogs following his commitment to pay veterinary bills and receive periodical inspections from an animal control officer to ensure the dogs are healthy.

After a probationary, year-long period, the case will be dismissed if the guidelines are met by Speakman.

The Golden Retriever and Great Pyrenees were between 1-2 years old.

According to Veterinarian Shane Lee, the dogs had not eaten in three weeks when they were turned over to Lee's Veterinary Hospital on Jan.28.

The landlord of the rental property where he was previously living found the dogs at the residence and informed law enforcement. Cullman city police officers were able to locate Speakman at a Cullman County residence a short time later.

Responding officer Chris Nichols previously told The Times both of the dogs’ ribs were showing and there was no sign of food near the residence.

The dogs were so weak, they could barely stand on their own,” Nichols said at the time. “Animals can be taken to the animal shelter if the owners cannot take care of them and it's easy to do.”
