Conor made the discovery on responding to a call from a concerned member of the public in County Wicklow. It is not known precisely how long the horses were in the vicinity but it appears that they had been abandoned and left there to die. The assistance of local Gardai was enlisted and the live animals were finally located.
The black mare cob and piebald yearling colt, named Ciara and Bob, were loaded and taken to the Irish Horse Welfare Trust’s centre in Wicklow for initial assessment.
Despite the best efforts of vets, Ciara lost her fight for life on Thursday night.
“Unfortunately, we received word of the plight of these horses too late for three of them” said Chief Inspector Dowling, “It is very disappointing that Ciara didn’t pull through, but we can take solace in the fact that Bob is getting stronger and should recover fully”.
When fit to travel, Bob will be transferred to the ISPCA’s National Animal Centre in Longford for further rehabilitation.
“I would really like to express my gratitude to the Gardai that attended the scene” added Conor, “the horses had moved in the time between when I had originally viewed them and when I returned with the Gardai and horsebox. Sergeant Roisin Daly and her crew went above and beyond the call of duty helping me search the side of a mountain on what was a wet and miserable day”.
