Manitoba girl, 7, mauled to death by dogs

CANADA -- Two Alaskan malamute dogs mauled a seven-year-old St. Andrews, Man., girl to death Sunday afternoon.

The girl was rushed to hospital in Winnipeg, where she was pronounced dead.

Her name wasn't released.

The girl knew the dogs, which are being held by the RM of Springfield's animal control department while the investigation continues.

“In this case, the main concern is seizing the animals and making sure the animals don’t cause any further harm and we just have to sit and wait for the investigation to unfold so we can proceed,” animal control officer Dan Fryer said.

He said animal control won't decide the fate of the dogs.

“It’s entirely up to the RCMP as to how they wish to proceed,” Fryer said. “It’s one of those things where they may request that the dogs be euthanized. I just don’t know."

RM of Springfield is a sprawling municipality on the eastern border of Winnipeg.
