Rottweiler maul Jack Russell. Owner promises to help Jack Russell; runs off with Rottweiler instead

CALIFORNIA -- The family of a three-legged Jack Russell terrier that was mauled to death by a Rottweiler is asking the public for help.

Ziggy was repeatedly bitten by a Rottweiler that was not on a leash at Pecan Park in Orangevale Wednesday. The owner's son, who was walking Ziggy, was also bitten several times on his hands as he tried to push the attacking dog away.

On Wednesday night Ziggy died from his massive internal injuries. The family of Ziggy's owner is asking for the public's help to identify the Rottweiler's owner.

The owner of the Rottweiler put the dog in his pick up and said he would go with the boy to a vet to treat Ziggy, who was critically injured.  But the man fled instead.

The boy says the suspects pickup had Oregon license plates. Ziggy ended up dying of his injuries.

"We don't want this to happen to anybody else," said Val Akana, the daughter of Ziggy's owner. "It's not right. It's not the law. You need to keep your dog on a leash and control them. And if you can't, keep them home."

Sacramento County Animal Control told the family they believe the same Rottweiler was responsible for biting another man in the area in recent days.
