INDIANA -- An Indiana community is howling for the death of a pit bull that mauled a 7-year-old girl in February — but his owner thinks they are barking up the wrong tree.
Jessica Nygra says she will never be able to shake the memory of seeing her darling daughter's bloody gashes after the beast attacked her.
The child was playing with her friends in the yard between their suburban homes in Portage at the time, according to local media.
"When I got to the hospital, what I saw was horrifying. My daughter's leg was torn apart, mauled," Nygra told NBC Chicago.
The furious mother filed a dangerous dog lawsuit and launched a petition urging for the euthanization of her neighbor Stan Butrym's dog Gus.
The city concurs. The owner does not.
"I'm very sympathetic. No one wants this on their conscience of a little girl getting hurt," Butrym told the station. "I feel bad for it, the family knows I feel bad for it, but Gus doesn't need the death penalty because of my mistake."
Butrym started a fundraising campaign in his mission to save his rescue dog's life. He has already gotten more than $540, much to the chagrin of Nygra's family.
Witnesses say this is not an isolated incident and that the canine has lashed out before … and even attacked Butrym.
