Newark-area man hurt, poodle killed in dog attack

NEW JERSEY -- A Newark-area man was left with multiple bite wounds and his 10-year-old poodle Yanni was killed after being attacked by a larger dog during a routine, Saturday-morning neighborhood walk.

"I was walking my dog like I do every morning," said 80-year-old Edward Yeninas, saying the attack occured while walking along East Rutherford Drive toward his Patricia Lane home.

Yeninas said he spotted the larger dog roaming without a leash and picked up his dog to head toward home. Yeninas said the larger dog grabbed his shirt, pulled him down from behind, and latched on to his right arm before attacking the 12-pound poodle.

Two neighbors intervened and were able to stop the attack, Yeninas said. "If those two guys hadn't come, I'd be dead," he said. "He tore me up real bad."

Yeninas was left with 20 to 30 puncture wounds on his hands, wrists and arms, he said. Yeninas said that animal control officials came to the neighborhood Sunday to remove the larger dog, after leaving the dog at home Saturday.

Delaware Animal Care and Control responded to the incident but no other details were available Sunday. An officer there did not respond to a request for comment.
