It happened about a month ago in the 3100 block of North Woodland. The kitten named Spiky was outside when a man allegedly picked him up and threw him into a nearby yard - as the cat's owner watched.
"For someone to do that to your pet, it's disturbing," said Karen Rowell, the cat's owner. "Kind of shocking, standing there watching and there's nothing you can do"
She remembers it like it was yesterday: Her kitten, Spiky, being tossed into the air over the fence to the neighbor's dogs.
She said the suspect, 57-year-old Raymond Merrian, was visiting that neighbor, Ralph Powell.
"A friend of mine was here, and said, 'Wonder what the dogs would do?' and tossed him over the fence," said Powell. "Tried to get the dog off, but couldn't."
Powell said his dogs are friendly, but instincts kicked in and Spiky didn't make it.
Merrian has since been arrested and charged with one count of felony cruelty to animals. He's jailed on a $25,000 bond.
The judge in the case has also filed a protective order against Merrian, telling him to stay away from Karen Rowell and any other witnesses in the case.
