Avondale animal control officer arrested for alleged DUI

ARIZONA -- An Avondale animal control officer has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.

Tempe police arrested Matthew Hoffman, 37, Wednesday afternoon after receiving several 911 calls regarding an Avondale police vehicle that was driving erratically in a parking lot near Broadway and Price roads.

The vehicle ultimately hit a curb and fire hydrant, according to Tempe police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pooley.

Responding officers found the vehicle disabled and contacted Hoffman. Pooley said a DUI investigation was conducted and Hoffman showed signs of impairment.

Hoffman was in full uniform and was driving a city of Avondale police vehicle at the time of the incident, according to Sgt. Mathew Hintz with the Avondale Police Department. Hintz said Hoffman was in Tempe on a business-related matter.

Hoffman has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Hintz said the Avondale Police Department intends to fully cooperate with Tempe's investigation.

Hoffman made news in 2010 when he rescued a large tortoise that was walking down the middle of the street near 107th Avenue and Indian School Road in Avondale.
