Elizabeth Stone went next door to her best friend’s house in the 700 block of Cottage Ave., according to her father Brandon Stone.
Elizabeth was playing with her best friend and the dog. While playing with the dog, Elizabeth’s friend and her mother, Aimee Dailey, had a bad feeling about the dog playing with her. As soon as they told another family member to remove the dog, Elizabeth stood up and the pit bull started biting her foot and ankle.
“My daughter’s best friend’s mother came darting out of their house and sprinted into the door of my house letting me know that my daughter needed me immediately,” said Brandon Stone.
Dailey and her children were at Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control looking for another pit bull they had lost. While there, they ran into another family wanting to turn their pit bull into Animal Care and Control. Instead of signing the dog over to the organization, the family gave the dog to Dailey and her family.
Animal Care and Control told WANE they never had ownership of the dog because the previous owner never signed any paperwork to relinquish the dog into their care. They were told if they wanted to give the dog to Dailey and her family, they must do it off their property.
Dailey said this has been an awful experience that she can’t get over.
“I’m sick over it,” she said. “I feel so bad that this happened to her.”
Dailey and her daughter have been visiting Elizabeth in the hospital since the incident.
Animal Care and Control said the dog is currently in their custody and will be put down after 10 days. During the 10 days, the dog will be tested for rabies and any other diseases that may have an impact on Elizabeth’s recovery.
