New York: Joshua Spears, 30, charged with animal cruelty after starving his dog

NEW YORK -- On April 28, Inv. Scott Mazzo arrested Joshua Spears, 30 years old, 2 Steuben St., Avoca, NY.  Spears was charged with one count of Misdemeanor animal cruelty (failure to provide sustenance and medical care).

Spears was charged after investigation into an animal cruelty complaint alleging a very skinny tan dog was not being provided with adequate food at a residence in Campbell. He is to appear in Thurston Town Court, May 6th, 2014.

The dog was signed over to the Finger Lakes SPCA on September 25th, 2013. The tan Mastiff mix named Clay was significantly underweight at that time. The dog has since recovered and is currently available for adoption at our shelter.

The Finger Lakes SPCA, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that has been in existence since 1949.  It is funded primarily by private donations.  The mission of the organization is to provide the shelter animals in our community with housing and care until they are adopted into a permanent home.

The organization is dedicated to strengthening the human-animal bond through education concerning the humane treatment of all animals and responsible animal guardianship.

The Finger Lakes SPCA, Inc. provides the following services to the community:  Animal Adoption (cats, dogs & horses), Canine Training, Canine Agility & Fun Classes, Cruelty Investigation & Rescue, Humane Education, Lost Pet Assistance, Shelter, Spay/Neuter Assistance, Volunteer Program, Wellness Clinic & Youth Involvement.
