Roane County family says neighbor intentionally ran over their dog

TENNESSEE --  A Roane County woman is accused of intentionally running over a neighbor's dog inside Cofer Circle. Mary Jessica Runkles has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty.

Bridgett Woodward and her daughter, Breelyn treat their dogs like members of the family so they can't understand why anyone would purposely want to hurt one of them.

“His neck was sliced open and it was like that wide,” says Bridgett.

Bridgett and her kids were getting ready to mow the yard last Tuesday, when they say Mary Runkles sped up their street.

“She doesn't go at a decent speed, she goes at like 40, 45 maybe even 50 miles per hour."

Their 3-legged chihuahua, Boots was nearby at a neighbor's house, when they say Runkles drove off the road to hit him.

“She swerved over, she almost actually hit my neighbor's fence where she was at, and she actually hit my dog,” says Bridgett.

Three-year-old Boots had been with the Woodward family since he was just six weeks old. He was Breelyn's best friend.

“I just started crying and ran inside,” recalls Breelyn.

Henry Disney, who has lived in the neighborhood for 27 years doesn't understand why Runkles takes the long way to her house. He has also pointed his finger, telling her to slow down several times.

“She lives at the bottom of the hill so I don't know why she comes around this way when it's shorter to the bottom of her driveway."

Local 8 tried to get in touch with Runkles, but she has not returned our calls. Runkles will make a court appearance in June.
