SOUTH CAROLINA -- A pit bull was put down and another seized after an Orangeburg teen was charged with animal cruelty during a raid Thursday, according to an Orangeburg Department of Public Safety incident report.
Investigators were initially at the Russell Street residence around 9 a.m. to serve an unrelated assault warrant on the teen. Those initial officers called back to animal control that at least one animal seen at the house appeared to be in poor health.
Orangeburg Department of Public Safety and Orangeburg County Animal Control officers later executed search warrants at the home.
When animal control officers arrived, they found chained onto a fence a pit bull that looked “extremely emaciated,” according to the report. Another animal was located on a couch that “appeared to be in severe pain and unable to move.”
When asked, the teen told officers the second dog had been run over by a car. Animal control officers, however, inspected the dog closer and decided it had “puncture wounds consistent with bite marks from fighting,” the report states.
The initial animal found was taken to the county animal control facility while the second dog was immediately taken to a veterinarian. However, “in the best interest of the dog, he was humanely put to sleep as to end his suffering,” the report concludes.
The 17-year-old Russell Street man was cited for two counts of animal cruelty.
